Questions that settle it

How disciplined will you be?

Aligners only move teeth while they are in your mouth. If you know you will leave them in a drawer after lunch, fixed braces do the work without relying on you.

How complicated is your bite?

Larger movements and bite corrections are often better handled by fixed braces. Mild crowding and small gaps are usually good aligner cases.

Is the patient a teenager?

Teenagers do well with either, but a parent should be realistic about who will keep track of the trays. Teeth still coming in also affect the timing.

Starting as an adult

There is no upper age limit if the gums and bone are healthy, which is why they are checked before anything is fitted. Many working adults prefer aligners or ceramic brackets for that reason alone. Older fillings, crowns and missing teeth can all be planned around.

The part people forget

Teeth tend to drift back. Whichever option you choose, the treatment ends with a retainer, and how faithfully you wear it decides how long the result lasts. Include that in your decision from day one.

Frequently asked questions

How long will treatment take?

It depends on how far your teeth need to move. You get a realistic estimate after your bite has been assessed, not before.

Are aligners less painful than braces?

Both cause some pressure and soreness when treatment moves on to a new stage. Aligners have no wires to rub the cheeks, while braces have nothing to take in and out.

Can I switch from braces to aligners later?

Sometimes, but it is not a simple swap. Ask at the assessment, and choose the option you expect to stick with.

Will my teeth need cleaning before braces are fitted?

Healthy gums come first. If there is tartar or decay, it is treated before brackets or aligners go on.
