Cavity or Dental Caries is an infectious disease that leads to demineralization of teeth enamel, decay and ultimately loss of teeth. The Anti Cavity Diet goes far beyond the traditional “BRUSH & FLOSS” routine. We will acknowledge you with the new concept of “ORAL CHEMOTHERAPY” to help you stop the continuous vicious cycle of caries!
THE RIGHT FOOD
Eating the right food strengthen your teeth and gums from inside and protects them from outside invaders as well. Teeth are essentially a kind of bone. They are harder because of the crystalline arrangement of molecule known as Hydroxyapatite. List of right type of food for your teeth is as follows
1. CALCIUM – The primary component of strong teeth is the mineral Calcium. Teeth require calcium even after they achieve their full growth, as, body keeps taking calcium from bones and teeth & replaces it with newer resources.
2. VITAMIN D – The Sun-Shine Vitamin! Vitamin D works hand in hand with Calcium. It does not contribute to hardness of bones & teeth, but at the same time it promotes the deposition of calcium in the teeth and skeleton. Without Vitamin D the calcium would not be absorbed by bones and teeth.
3. VITAMIN C – Here comes the “COLLAGEN VITAMIN”. Vitamin C is very vital to the health of the teeth and more importantly gums. It aids in forming the connective tissue of bone & teeth and gums. In fact, one of the earliest symptom of Vitamin C deficiency or Scurvy is BLEEDING or SORE GUMS.
4. FLUORIDE – Fluoride has been proved to make teeth caries resistant. Fluoride is harder to get dissolved by acid, which is produced by oral bacteria, which eventually leads to cavities. Fluoride is present naturally in rocks, salt & water. Many communities adopt drinking water fluoridation to prevent caries.
THE PROBLEMATIC FOOD
1. SUGARS – Sugar is one of the most essential ingredients of modern diet. Sugar in any form serve as a banquet meal for plaque bacteria. Sugar be it natural one like – Fructose (found in fruits) or processed one or be it Honey (no matter how unrefined) nourishes the bacterial growth and thus caries.
2. Complex Carbohydrates – Researches shows that starchy food is more detrimental to your teeth than sugars. Starchy food sticks for longer time over tooth surfaces & provides plenty of fuel for enamel eroding bacteria. The saliva usually dissolves and flushes away the small amount of sugar from tooth surfaces but might not wash away all the clumps of starchy foods (like potato chips, crackers) that stuck in and around molars.
That doesn’t mean that you should eliminate sugar and starch from your daily diet. They are a part of balanced diet after all! It only means that you need to be more conscious of thee food and must follow a protocol of proper cleaning of teeth and maintaining a good & healthy oral hygiene.
WHAT YOU EAT MATTERS AFTER ALL!
